Destruction Prevention Tips for Spring Storms
Naturally, your home insurance policy is in place to help you and your family if a spring or summer storm causes damage to your home. But there are also steps you can take beforehand to prevent damage altogether.
Make sure doors and windows are secure.
The areas on your home that are most susceptible to storm-related are your doors and windows. Make these as weatherproof as possible by applying weather stripping, replacing any damaged window or door glass, and installing accordion shutters or permanent shutters.
Repair loose siding or shingles.
Take a walk around your house and look at the siding and shingles. If a lot of these elements are falling off or broken, repair them as best you can prior to the storm season. Loose siding, shingles or shutters can be picked up by the wind quite easily and may end up tearing off even more of the exterior of your home.
Consider a new roof if you need one.
Besides your home’s doors and windows, your roof is the next most susceptible to storm damage. If you look at your roof in the spring and see a lot of curled, stained, broken or bent shingles, in some cases, it can be better to simply replace your roof. Remember that shingled roofs also have a lifespan of a maximum of 20 years in most cases (other types of roofs may last longer).
Keep objects out of your yard.
In extreme cases, the wind may pick up objects lying around your yard and crash them into other things on your property. This can naturally damage these objects (for example, toys, bikes, etc.), but it can also cause damage to other things like the exterior of your home and any vehicles you have left outside.
Sometimes, damage from spring and summer storms is simply inevitable. That’s why you have home insurance. Remember that your home insurance policy is in place to work for you. If you have questions about your policy or your coverage, speak to your insurance agent. Also, make sure you have a copy of your policy in your home for reference. If there’s something missing from your plan or you’d like additional coverage, your agent can help fill in the gaps and give you added peace of mind.
